Our Approach
How we do what we do
01
Relationship First
Vulnerability is at the foundation of any relationship in which feedback is given. In our first sessions we prioritise building a trusting and caring relationship with your child so that they are open, ready and willing to receive guidance and feedback when the time comes.
02
Explicitly teach the codes and rules of the English Language
Margot is currently working to get her Orton Gillingham certification. She assesses all students for fundamental understandings of phonics and provides knowledge and skills to supplement gaps. She provides students with syllabication strategies so that they have a plan of attack when they find a word that is unfamiliar. She enhances their comprehension by teaching them morphology (the study of the units of meaning in language) and summarisation so as to enhance their comprehension of what they read.
03
Build on Unique Strengths and Interests
In getting to know your child, we will get to know their personality, strengths and interests and will work to design skill based sessions that enable them to build and explore those things they are most passionate about so that they can more adeptly use those skills in their school work.
04
Make it a product (where possible)
Margot trained at a project based high school and believes in the intrinsic motivation that comes from having learning generate a product that exists in the world. Where practical Margot will work with your student so that they have a real world product to show off to family and friends as a result of their work.
The Intro Session
During the Intro Session we will:

-
Get to know your student and their interests and goals
-
Confer with you about what you are noticing about your child's learning
-
Conduct spelling, phonics and oral reading assessments.

It's helpful if your child brings a book they have enjoyed reading with them to the session.
