Margot's Story
I grew up here in Bermuda and went to school and college in England. After graduating with a degree in English Literature and following family convention, I spent a number of years training and practicing as a lawyer before realizing that I needed to seek more meaningful work.
I sought out career coaching and cycled through a number of different business roles and options, before a chance introduction led to my discovery of Cardinal Manufacturing, a classroom based youth run business. This was exactly what I had been looking for when I was in high school and college; an experiential way of learning what tasks specific jobs entailed and did I enjoy them.
In service of that passion, I worked at The Mirrors Programme as a youth life coach and office manager. I then went on to facilitate the Lemonade Day entrepreneurship curriculum in Bermuda's public middle schools through Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative.
During Covid, I obtained my single subject English Credential at High Tech High in San Diego in California in order to develop my English specific skills and be mentored by other inspirational project based educators.
While in California, I noticed that my only 8 of my 9th graders were reading at grade level and sought all the resource and methodologies I could find to try to help them. This led to me teaching them morphology and starting my training in the Orton Gillingham approach to teaching phonics.
At the same time, I was coming home every summer to facilitate the Skillcraft Youth Internship which I also run and met a young person who at age 16 was reading at the age of a 9 year old. It occurred to me just how catastrophic a struggle with literacy can be for a young person's life outcomes.
When I returned to Bermuda in the summer of 2023, I decided I wanted to do something about it and so WordCraft Tutoring Services was born. I look forward to helping your child grow as a reader through explicit instruction about letters, sounds, words and ideas so that they can have the future they deserve.
